Samsung’s upcoming consumer grade 360 camera was up for pre-orders today in South Korea. Within minutes of the launch, all of the pre-orders were sold out. With the high demand of virtual reality camera devices, Samsung’s new flagship 360 cameras seems to be an instant hit.
The price point for the Samsung Gear 360 camera was set at 399,300 KRW which equates to about $350.00. It’s an unbelievable price point considering that it shoots in 3840 x 1920 resolution at 30 fps. That’s just a little shy of 4K resolution which is 3840 x 2160 pixels.
There isn’t a set release date yet for the Samsung Gear 360 in the US. There’s a high possibility that this unit will sell out just as fast here in the United States once the pre-orders go into launch.
The Samsung Gear 360 is a light-weight portable 360 VR camera that’s going to give consumers the ability to shoot at will, similar to a GoPro but a little more expansive with the view. It shoots in a fish eye lens just like the GoPro’s do but it has the capabilities to give you a 360 range. The above video demonstrates just how incredible the video experience is as you have the ability to see in all directions. You can finally capture a physical moment of your surrounding with a 360 camera device.
The amazing thing about the Samsung Gear 360 camera is that it will be compatible to view on virtual reality devices. In the future, you’ll be able to see videos like never before with wearables such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
We can expect this VR camera to make a big splash in today’s market because of the affordability and quality of the device. This is definitely a consumer grade 360 camera where as the Orah 4i is one notch above with the capabilities of live streaming unlike the Samsung Gear 360. But we expect Samsung to create a version in the future where it’ll let you live stream straight from the Gear 360 VR camera.
The Gear 360 is set to pre-release soon in Europe and haven’t announced a specific date in the US. Expect Samsung to unveil the pre-release date in the summer.
