Marvel Entertainment recently disclosed that the company is setting its sights on VR. In a recent interview with Gamespot, Jay Ong, Marvel’s Senior VP of Games and Innovations, released information that the company will be announcing VR news that fans are sure to be wild about.
“It’s going to be exciting here,” said Ong. “Absolutely expect some announcements in VR, that’s something we’re really excited about. I think our fans are going to go crazy. The things we’re doing there are absolutely amazing.”
While Ong did not get specific about what the upcoming VR projects were, he did say that the company has a clear goal for their VR production, and that is in bringing the best quality to the market.”In VR…we think if we do something there, it shouldn’t be just for the novelty of it. It should be something that defines the platform, that defines the experience,” said Ong.
He likened their goals for VR to the success of upcoming PS4 Spider-Man game. Ong told Gamespot of Spider-man, “it’ll be one of the best games on the platform [PS4]…We think our efforts in VR will be the same thing.”
While these are some large claims, Marvel’s past projects and public popularity attest to a highly plausible success. There might even be the possibility that Marvel has already teamed up with a VR company such as HTC or Oculus in making a collaborated VR experience based on the Marvel universe. In the past, we’ve seen Mark Zuckerberg with prototype gear that allowed him to sling webs like Spider-Man in virtual reality. Zuckerberg stated, “We’re working on new ways to bring your hands in virtual and augmented reality. Wearing these gloves, you can draw, type on a virtual keyboard, and even shoot webs like Spider Man. That’s what I’m doing here.”
As always, we will be keeping our ear close to the ground for the latest breaking news of Marvel’s highly anticipated entrance in VR. Stay tuned!
