There’s been many VR animation studios releasing imaginative virtual reality experiences and ‘Invasion!’ by Baobab Studios ranks amongst the top. The creative team members over at Baobab came up with an animated VR experience about a bunny and its encounter with aliens which is set in a mountainous region. This VR short lasts around 6 minutes and is available today on the Samsung Gear VR and the Oculus Rift, with future ambitions to release on the HTC Vive, Google Daydream, and PS VR (PlayStation VR). The director of “Madagascar,” Eric Darnell, led the team in creating this animated VR adventure and he let us know that it wasn’t an easy adventure.
“We Tested over a thousand people,” said Eric Darnell, CCO of Baobab Studios. During the beginning stages of development for ‘Invasion!’ Baobab’s team had to find the right way in telling a story in VR. Baobab Studios is made up of experienced animators from the largest animation studios such as DreamWorks and Pixar but they never created something to this degree. “This is not just cinema on steroids. It’s brand new media,” said Eric. With virtual reality being a relatively new medium to develop on, the team over at Baobab had to experiment away from traditional practices.
But the animated experience looks to be paying off as Roth Kirschenbaum got a hold of ‘Invasion!’ Maureen Fan (CEO of Baobab) and the executive team recently visited their Hollywood Studios to conduct a simple explanatory meeting but ended up walking away with a Blockbuster deal instead. Roth Kirschenbaum has confirmed that they’ll be creating a full-length adaptation of ‘Invasion!’ in partnership with Baobab. They haven’t announced a director or writer for the adaptation.
Background of Roth Kirschenbaum
Roth Kirschenbaum was formed last year by former Universal Pictures production executive, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum and former Chairman at Walt Disney Studios, Joe Roth. The Roth Kirschenbaum studio was formed last year. Jeffrey Kirschenbaum and Joe Roth have been involved in producing some of the biggest films installments like Fast & Furious and “Bourne.” The two together have worked on “Snow White and the Huntsman” in the past and looks to create further hit films together in the future. The ‘Invasion!’ adaptation will be a true testament to their recent founding of the company.
Baobab’s continued success in VR
Baobab Studios looks to continue their development of the amazing VR story involving the bunny and the aliens. They are scheduling to release the second episode early next year. The studio is committed to developing high quality stories on the VR platform and will continue to push the boundaries of storytelling.
